Educational Programme Objectives

6B01413 “Music Education”

To train music educators who possess modern musical, communication, digital and entrepreneurial competencies, as well as skills in inclusive music education, and who are capable of creating high-quality educational content for music instruction and organising the music education process.

7M01404 “Music Education”

To train competitive and qualified master's degree holders who possess fundamental theoretical and methodological training in the field of updated music education and are capable of effectively carrying out professional activities in music education within higher, secondary and vocational education systems. Graduates are expected to meet labour market needs, demonstrate personal, general cultural, professional and subject-specific competencies, and apply these competencies in practical professional activities.

Competencies to Be Developed

Knowledge of the fundamentals of philosophy to develop a coherent worldview.
Application of philosophical principles and categories to evaluate and analyse various social trends, facts and phenomena.
Knowledge of the main branches, issues, theories and methods of philosophy, as well as the content of contemporary philosophical debates.
Understanding of social development issues.
Knowledge of contemporary civilisation and cultural issues, as well as legal, moral and ethical standards relevant to professional activities.
Demonstration of ensemble performance and orchestral music-making skills.
Proficiency in orchestral performance and the interpretation of orchestral works from different historical periods, styles and genres.
Understanding of the specific characteristics of orchestral accompaniment.

Learning Outcomes

History of the Establishment and Development of the Specialisation

The administration of the A. S. Pushkin Ural Pedagogical Institute has been training music teachers for general secondary schools with the aim of improving children's musical and aesthetic education in the context of modern Kazakhstan's development.

In 1990, the specialisation 0317 “Music and Singing” was established on the basis of the Faculty of Art and Graphics. It was subsequently transformed into specialisation 031740 “Music Education”.

A significant contribution to the development of music education was made by A. S. Moldagayinov, a member of the Composers' Union of Kazakhstan, as well as lecturers N. S. Khamitova, R. G. Shyntemirova, N. G. Sivash, N. A. Dumcheva and others.

Under the leadership of I. M. Lomonosov, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences and Professor, who served as Head of the Department, work on providing students with comprehensive musical education continued to develop. These efforts began to yield results within a relatively short period. The first graduates, including T. Burakova, D. Baitileuov, M. Zholbayev and N. Tasbolatov, demonstrated their qualifications as highly skilled professionals.

In 1995–1996, M. M. Nagimova, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences and Associate Professor, took over as Head of the Department of Music and Singing. Thanks to her professional expertise and organisational abilities, scientific and methodological work was effectively established. As a result, the number of applicants increased and demand for the specialisation grew.

During this period, A. A. Kusainov, A. B. Zhardemova, M. Kolesnikov, D. M. Baitileuov and L. K. Omirzakova made significant contributions to the training of future specialists. The teaching staff was subsequently expanded to include Sh. Kydyrniyazova, S. N. Koshkarbayev, Associate Professor Zh. A. Rakhimova, Associate Professor K. K. Kozhakov, S. Rakhmetzhanov and others. The current generation of academic staff continues this work.

To enhance the academic qualifications of the teaching staff, the Department invited leading specialists in music pedagogy to deliver lectures and conduct master classes. These specialists included M. R. Zhardemaliyeva, Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences and Professor; E. B. Abdullin, Professor and Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences at Moscow State Pedagogical University; B. I. Karakulov, Doctor of Art History and Professor at the Kurmangazy Kazakh National Conservatory; and A. T. Zhaiymov, Honoured Worker of the Republic of Kazakhstan and Professor, among others.

At the beginning of the new millennium, specifically in 2004, M. M. Nagimova, Head of the Music Education Department, defended her candidate dissertation and made a significant contribution to organising the Department's activities in accordance with the objectives of building an independent Kazakhstan.

The methodological support for the educational process was updated, and curricula and educational programmes for training future music teachers were brought into line with higher standards. The Department's academic potential increased, and research activities gained momentum.

M. Nagimova and K. L. Kismetov defended candidate dissertations, while K. R. Kazhimova obtained a PhD degree. The following lecturers defended their master's theses and were awarded master's degrees in Music Education: A. V. Yurchenko, G. B. Musagaliyeva, R. Zh. Kuanshaliyeva, K. E. Bissekova, L. M. Kazhgaliyeva, G. E. Utegenova, G. A. Bekeyeva, A. Zh. Kenzhegalieva, E. S. Akhatova, M. T. Gabbasova, A. M. Kenzhegaliev and others.

Another important area of the Department's activities was concert and creative work. Notable publications and musical works produced in this field include:

A. Kusainov — compositions for folk instrument orchestras and folk ensembles.
M. Baitileuova — compositions for the bayan.
B. Zhardemova — an additional textbook for students studying music history.
M. Nagimova, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences — The World of Art and The Art Lesson in Students' Worldview: Theory and Practice (monograph).

The Department's lecturers actively participated in international and national conferences, as well as master classes held at West Kazakhstan State University with the participation of prominent figures in music education from the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Russian Federation.

In 2015, the Music Education Department and the Vocal Department were merged to establish the Department of Music Education and Vocal Studies. The newly established Department was headed by O. A. Babenko, Associate Professor and Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences at M. Utemisov West Kazakhstan State University.

Creative Achievements of Students and Academic Staff

Students of the specialisation regularly participated in competitions and festivals, receiving awards as laureates and diploma holders.

The Department's lecturers also received awards at various international and national competitions. They included Associate Professors K. K. Kuzhakov, M. M. Nagimova, A. A. Kusainov, D. M. Baitileuov, A. K. Berdigaliyev, D. N. Esentemirov, A. K. Aigaliyeva, M. T. Mergaliyeva and others.

Students continued to demonstrate a high level of professional preparation through their participation in musical competitions and festivals.

The “BatysSTAR” group — third place in the regional patriotic song competition, Grand Prix at the international “Na Nikolayevskoy” competition (Orenburg), and second place at the international “Edil Men Zhaiyk” competition named after I. Zhakanov (Atyrau).
The “MakhamBand” group (first lineup) — third-place laureates of the international “On the Wings of Music” competition (Samara).
The “MakhamBand” group (second lineup) — first-place winners of the national “Like the Flame of Youth, Like the Desire of the Heart — Dos-Mukasan” competition (Almaty).
The “Kausar” trio, led by lecturer G. E. Utegenova — Grand Prix winners of the 1st national song festival “Zhambyl Zhastary Shaqyrady” and recipients of a first-degree diploma at the national military-patriotic song competition “Erlikke Tagzym”, organised to mark the 70th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War.
Aruzhan Bisembay — third place at the national “Voice of Turkestan” song competition, diploma holder at the national “Zhas Kanat” competition (Astana), and first-place winner at the international vocal competition named after Roza Baglanova (Astana).

The folk ensemble “Ata Mura”, which won laureate status at a regional competition, qualified to participate in the international “Shabyt” festival in 2005.

In April 2007, the Department organised a regional competition entitled “Best Music Teacher” for music teachers. The event identified talented and promising young music educators, including M. Utemisova and other participants.

The Current Stage of Development of the Educational Programme

Previously, this specialisation was implemented under the code 6B01404. Since 2024, in accordance with amendments to the regulatory legal documents of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the field of education, the specialisation's code and title have been reviewed and updated.

At present, the educational process is implemented under the updated code and title 6B01413 (IP) “Music Education”.

The content of the specialisation is continuously improved to meet current labour market requirements, educational standards and the principles of professional competency development. Curricula, educational programmes and teaching and methodological documentation have been comprehensively updated and are implemented in accordance with the established procedures.

Currently, the educational programme “Training Music Teachers” is headed by K. L. Kismetov, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Excellence in Culture of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and member of the Composers' Union of Kazakhstan.

The educational programme is delivered by highly qualified academic staff holding advanced degrees, laureates and diploma holders of various competitions and festivals, Honoured Artists of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and talented educators who make a significant contribution to the professional training of future music education specialists.
